The Language of Flowers
An Art Exhibition and Sale by Margaret Ryall
- The Twine Loft in Trinity
June 1 - June 30, 2006
"As a child, my playground was meadows, forests, rocks and seashore. The many hours I spent scrambling around these places brought me in close contact with the colours, scents, textures and minute details of nature. A buttercup in a meadow is something entirely different when viewed at eye level while hiding in tall grass. Yellow fills your eyes, lines run rampant, silken petals invite touch. The intensity of the sensory experience causes a change in scale perception; the flower feels as large as you are. This focusing was a calming element in my life; it blocked extraneous thoughts, worries and noise. It was the meditation of my youth.
As I pause and enter a new stage in my life, I am reconnecting with the world around me. Simple events and objects, seemingly insignificant, often have a profound effect on my feelings, perceptions and creative output. I examine, connect with, and reflect on what I see. Aspects of this reflection appear in my current body of work in words and images.
By focusing mainly on close-up views of flowers, using acrylics and mixed media, I invite viewers into my reflection; I want them to pause, to contemplate, to react to the sensory experience laid out for them. In a world of speed, tragedy and disassociation, I prefer to focus on peace, calmness, beauty and natural rhythms. The passage of time, life cycles and the transient nature of beauty are prominent themes in my work. When you look into a flower you look into life."
